Why Have I Received a Settlement Agreement?

A Settlement Agreement (previously called a Compromise Agreement) is a legally binding document your Employer may offer you when they wish to end your employment.

In exchange for a financial settlement, you are asked to waive your legal rights — including the right to bring claims against your employer in the future.

It is a legal requirement for your Settlement Agreement to be reviewed by an independent Employment Solicitor before it is valid. This is where we come in.

What Does the Process Involve?

We start by reviewing your Settlement Agreement in detail. We’ll assess:

• Whether the terms favour your Employer too heavily
• Any post-employment restrictions that may affect your future work
• The financial offer — is it fair, reasonable, and in line with your rights?
• Whether a reference has been included and what your employer intends to say about you

Once reviewed, we’ll book a meeting with you — either in person or over a video call. This usually takes around 40 minutes to an hour. Our job is to make sure you fully understand what you are agreeing to.

When you’re ready to proceed, we will sign the agreement on your behalf and send it back to your Employer.

Who Pays the Fees?

In almost every case, your Employer pays our legal fees. This will be written into your Settlement Agreement.

Once signed, we invoice your Employer directly. You don’t need to pay us — there is no cost to you.
